The distance between Cape Oma and Cape Shiokubi in Hakodate City is only 17.5 kilometers over the Tsugaru Strait. On a clear day, you can see Hakodate’s famous Goryokaku Tower from Cape Oma with the naked eye. You can also take a commemorative photo at our tuna monument. The monument is modeled after a 440 kilogram tuna that was caught by pole fishing here in Oma.
In addition, in July 2024, a new tourism spot was born with a monument erected to commemorate the song “Song of the Number One Tuna.” The song is performed by Kohei Fukuda, Oma Town’s tourism ambassador. The names of the fishermen who caught that tuna are also inscribed on the back of the monument, so please take a look at their names.
The entire Shimokita Peninsula has been recognized as a national geopark (Shimokita Geopark). In November 2017, Shimokita Geopark entered into a cooperation agreement with Yehliu Geopark in Taiwan. Omazaki is one of the 16 geoheritage sites of Shimokita Geopark.
