Q: What season is best to eat Oma Tuna?
A:Oma Tuna can be eaten in Oma all year round, regardless of the tuna fishing season. This is because tuna caught during the season are flash frozen and stored at various stores in Oma Town. For information on stores selling tuna, please see the gourmet page.
Q:Can you recommend any specific restaurants or lodging?
A:We recommend all the stores listed on this website. Please understand that we cannot give preferential treatment by promoting any store or facility over others. For lodging reservations, please contact each facility directly.
Q:Can I see the tuna being unloaded from the fishing boats?
A:Pole-and-line fishing is done during the day and the fishing boats return to the loading dock at Oma Fishing Port as soon as they catch a tuna. There is no set landing time and there can be days that go by without a single tuna being caught. Hopefully you can be fortunate enough to witness the tuna being unloaded.
Longline fishing is done at night, and fishing boats that go out to sea as the sun sets usually return to the fishing port around 7 to 9 in the morning. If you come during this time, you will have a slightly higher chance of seeing the unloading scene.
*Please observe from a distance in order not to disturb the staff of the Oma Fisheries Association or the fishermen.
Q:Can I charter a fishing boat?
A:Please see the information on “Fishing Boat Seiryumaru <https://oma-wide.net/menu/seiryumaru/>”.
The tuna fishing experience tour is organized by “Shimokita Tabi Assist <https://shimokita-tabi.jp/shimokita-deep-experience>”. For inquiries and reservations, please contact each business via the link.
Q:Can I camp at the tent site?
A:Camping is possible at the Cape Oma Tent Site. You can use it without making a reservation. Please note that charcoal is not allowed, so please use the gas stove in the kitchen building.
